Kinder Morgan Coke Barn

Kinder Morgan Coke Barn

Project Summary

NWICA Contractor: Hasse Construction Company, Inc.
Location: Whiting, Indiana
Cost: $3,904,000
Type: Industrial
Completion Date: 02/15/2012
Project Size: 70,000 Square Feet

Project Description

Due to the expansion and remodelization of BP Refinery, large additional amounts of coke will be produced in refining process. This coke will then be transported onto refinery and be used by other vendors for various uses. Hasse Construction Company constructed a large pre-engineered metal building to temporarily house some of this coke material within the BP Refinery. This coke building and coke material movement operation will be controlled by Kinder Morgan. This pre-engineered metal building measured 200' wide x 350' long with a roof peak at 100' above ground line. The building required the shipment of approximately 75 semi loads of material to the jobsite.. This is one of the largest buildings within the BP Refinery and construction of said building required new approaches. The Project included installation of all metal building components, HVAC equipment, overhead doors, elevated structural steel and roof panel installation on a steeply sloped roof. All work was performed inside BP's fence line and underneath BP Safety requirements. Due to the very large nature of this pre-engineered metal building and location of where it had to be erected; this was a very unique and innovated project. No building like this has been constructed within BP's refinery. Innovation required developing methods to install the roof panels on extreme slopes, creating a multiple crane lift for all of the steel structural frames along with the creation of new and never used, mechanical devices used for hoisting material on the jobsite.
